Merchant of Venice (Drunk) is a Bard & Bourbon production.
Watch as the seedy underbelly of Venice's most rich and powerful is exposed for the world to see. Antonio, a successful Merchant in Venice, and his posse of friends walk around like they own the place, but do they?
Meanwhile, Shylock the Jew, a successful money lender, has endured the abuse of Antonio for years. That all changes when Antonio suddenly needs his help and the opportunity for revenge presents itself. Shylock is out to get even, but at what cost?
"All that glisters is not gold. Often you have heard that told. Many a man his life hath sold." - Shakespeare, Merchant of Venice
Trigger Warning: Antisemitism. Merchant of Venice is often described as a "problem" play. A problem play is a historical piece that does not translate well to a modern audience. In this case, there are several acts of prejudice against Shylock, the Jewish character. Mad Rogues take these messages of hate very seriously. In preparation for this show, we spoke with several resources here in Milwaukee to talk about antisemitism and what plays like Merchant of Venice mean to the Jewish communities of today. From day one we have strived to respect the Jewish culture - from the rehearsal room to the stage. We feel this play is relevant and our goal in telling such a vital story within our typical Bard & Bourbon style is to use the booze to put a magnifying glass on the moments of hate. We hope in doing so our audience feels welcomed into a tough and important conversation.
