This is a LLCC encore of a course that was presented last summer.
Joye M. Carter, M.D., SLO County's first full-time coroner. will provide you with insights into how the San Luis Obispo Coroners Office operates.
Explored will be such questions as:
what are the duties and responsibilities of the Coroners office?
what is the difference between a coroner and a medical examiner?
when and how are autopsies performed?
are there different kinds of autopsies?
how many autopsies are performed in our county each year?
what are inquests and when are they held?
Dr. Carter will also describe some of the challenges faced by people of limited means who must find their way through the maze of the criminal justice system.
Dr. Joye M. Carter is a triple board certified physician who has specialized in the field of Forensic Pathology. She is the first African-American to be appointed a Chief Medical Examiner in the United States. Dr. Carter is a graduate of Howard University College of Medicine and Wittenberg University, and is a veteran of the United States Air Force. She has written three books and is working on a fourth. Dr. Carter has worked with people all over the world who need ethical and neutral consulting in forensic pathology and death investigation.
