Flash Fiction Workshop with Francine Witte
People love flash fiction (stories under 1000 words) for their concise and inventive method of storytelling. Not merely a matter of word count, though, flash has an intensity that separates it from a vignette or anecdote. A good flash should haunt you long after you've read it.
To this end, there are certain techniques language, style, the use of the surreal, and the unsaid, among others that will be covered in this class.
Each week, one or two of these techniques will be discussed with examples of published flashes using these techniques, as well as writing exercises.
The workshop will be generative in nature.
Francine Witte is the author of four poetry chapbook, one full-length collection, and the forthcoming, Theory of Flesh from Kelsay Books. Her flash fiction has appeared in numerous journals, anthologized in the most recent New Micro (W.W. Norton) and her novella-in-flash, The Way of the Wind is forthcoming from Ad Hoc Fiction, as well as a full-length collection of flash fiction, Dressed All Wrong for This which is forthcoming from Blue Light Press.
