Bassanio loves Portia, a beautiful heiress, but he lacks enough money to woo her properly. Antonio agrees to finance his friend. Antonio borrows from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender. But when Antonio defaults on the loan, his life is on the line. It is up to Portia to try to save him.
