Told in vivid colors and with fleeting moments of surrealism, Antonella Suadasassis engrossing and intimate debut feature is the arresting story of the emancipation of a young mother living in a highly patriarchal society.
Isabel, a thoughtful, demure young housewife, works as a seamstress in a postcard-perfect Costa Rican seaside village. She is a good mother, wife and daughter-in-law, and she teaches those roles and expectations her daughters. However, when she is pressured by her intrusive and loudly opinionated in-laws to have another baby, a boy, even as her already cramped household struggles to stay afloat, Isa finds herself suffocated. Desperate to escape and reaching her breaking point, Isa wakes up to the possibilities of a life lived on her own terms.
