Louisville Cultural Council Presents Silent Film: The Doll and Young Mr. Jazz
TICKETS AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR! The Louisville Cultural Council is pleased to present: The Doll (1919), directed by Ernst Lubitsch Plus Harold Lloyd in Young Mr. Jazz (1919) Featuring live piano by Rodney Sauer to accompany this wacky, rambunctious comedy. Costumes encouraged! ...A trip back 100 years in film making.
Based on the same Hoffman story as the ballet Coppelia, "The Doll" features a man, deathly afraid of getting married, who decides to instead buy a life-like doll to get his family to stop nagging him. But when the doll-makers assistant breaks the mechanical contraption, they need someone as a substitute; so a real girl (the charming actress Ossi Oswalda) takes the dolls place. The movie is full of whimsy, broad comedy, and plenty of Mel Brooks-style wackiness, and was a major hit at the 2017 San Francisco Silent Film Festival. It was attacked by the church for its unflattering portrayal of a bunch of hedonistic monks, and maybe also for its plethora of visual and verbal double-entendres; but despite very European sensibilities, its fine for an audience of all ages.
