Managing Employees in an Organized Workplace
Managing both union-represented and non-represented employees can be a great balancing act. HR professionals and supervisors are required to navigate the complexities of working under a labor agreement and with unionized workers, while also maintaining a consistent and cohesive workplace for non-union employees. This presentation is designed to provide HR professionals and supervisors with a general understanding of the fundamental principles for managing union employees and typical challenges that arise in such an environment, as well as provide some guidelines and best practices for successfully managing union and non-union employees side by side. Topics to be covered include: Basics of federal and state labor law; Understanding what constitutes protected activity for both union and non-union employees; Labor contracts vs. employee handbooks; Workplace policies and communications; Practical guidelines for supervisors when managing represented employees or during a union organizing campaign, including what a manager can and cannot say or do; Negotiations, understanding a Company's bargaining obligations and avoiding liability for unlawful unilateral changes in a workplace with unionized employees; Working under a union contract, including contract administration and conducting investigations, discipline and resolving grievances in a "just cause" system; Significant causes of unionization and tips on preventing organization of non-union employees.
