The evening will be dedicated to the music of two icons- and is a preview of a program Tamir Hendelman will perform later in the month at Copenhagen's legendary Jazzhus Montmartre.
Duke Ellington was one of the most original and important figures in the 20th century American music. His career lasted over fifty years and played a large part in the evolution of jazz. One of the originators of big-band jazz, a composer of thousands of scores, and a creator of one of the most distinctive ensemble sounds in all of Western music. Thelonius Monk was one of the creators of modern jazz. For much of his career, he performed and recorded with small groups. One of the most prolific composers in the history of jazz, his unique and innovative compositions are known for their unique rhythms and intervals. His friend David Amram said: "I think that Monk was probably one of the most inspiring, delightful, warm, sensitive, funny, brilliant people to be around, and his music reflects that." Tamir Hendelman is known as a leader of his own trio with two jazz chart topping releases under his name, as well as a long-time member of the Jeff Hamilton Trio and Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, and has performed and recorded with vocalists Roberta Gambarini, Natalie Cole, Tierney Sutton and Barbra Streisand. He has performed with orchestras, including a new rendition of Rhapsody In Blue- and given solo and duo recitals celebrating the music of Cole Porter, Thelonius Monk, Dizzy Gillespie and more. Most recently, he has led interdisciplinary arts workshops at schools such as Oberlin, Idyllwild Academy and the Cranbrook Academy- weaving performances which combine film/dance/theatre/creative writing and music.
