Book signing & Presentation with Julian Guthrie, author of "The Billionaire and The Mechanic"
August 24, 2013 5 7 pm Tidewater room, above Reception
Come meet author Julian Guthrie and Norbert Bajurin, the "mechanic" behind the bestselling book, "The Billionaire and the Mechanic: How Larry Ellison and a Car Mechanic Teamed Up to Win Sailing's Greatest Race, The America's Cup" and get the inside story of how the America's Cup came home.
Julian, an award-winning journalist with the San Francisco Chronicle and contributor to the Wall Street Journal, will sign copies of her book and show an exclusive video presentation, including images of Larry Ellison and the astounding boats of the America's Cup past and present. She will also discuss the history of the Cup, the colorful characters, the mistakes made, lessons learned, and where the Cup almost went instead of San Francisco.
Julian will be joined by Norbert Bajurin, the "mechanic" of her book, who is the commodore of the Golden Gate Yacht Club, the 6th trustee of the oldest trophy in international sports. Norbert will discuss details of racing on the San Francisco Bay, and his unlikely partnership with ORACLE TEAM USA and friendship with Ellison.
Special guest, Joseph Ozanne, an engineer for ORACLE TEAM USA, will talk about what it's like to design these high-tech catamarans. Ozanne was 29 when he designed the massive hard sail for Oracle's trimaran that won the Cup in 2010. It was the largest wing ever built for air or sea.
"The Billionaire and the Mechanic" books will be available for purchase at the Mercantile, and at the event and book signing.
Enjoy passed canapés and wine.
Following the event, join us for dining at Murray Circle or Farley Bar, reservations encouraged.
