Charleston Author Series Luncheon Congratulations, Who Are You Again?: A Memoir by Harrison Scott Key
Here's your chance to have lunch with your favorite author! On July 26th at Halls Signature Events, you'll enjoy three courses by Hall's executive chef Robyn Guisto, excellent company and a discussion of Harrison Scott Key's new book Who Are You Again?: A Memoir.
ABOUT THE BOOK Dreamers, Unite! Throughout his life, Harrison failed at so many things, flailing himself at every new career path that seemed promising, until one day, after drinking perhaps too many beers and dusting off his King James Bible, he stumbled across a passage about a lonely pelican, which burst into flame inside him. In a mad blaze of holy illumination, Harrison realized his dream. He would write a funny book.
This dream transforms his life beyond all comprehension, in which he becomes a signer of autographs, a giver of interviews, and a casher of checks "worth more money than my father had ever imagined any of us might see, this side of a drug-related felony." And yet, even as he gains the world, Harrison stands to lose everything that matters most: his family, his mind, his soul. This is a no-holds-barred look at the life of every ambitious human creature, whether you want to write books or make music, start a business or start a revolution.
The book sugarcoats nothing about the grueling parts of forgoing safety for the pursuit of a lifes calling. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Like Flannery OConnor meets Chuck Klosterman meets Seinfeld. Southern Living Key humorously and tenderly mines his own life to understand why on earth anyone would want to become a writer. Garden & Gun Hilarious and illuminating. Booklist Key is as wise as he is funny. Christian Century For all of his biting wit, Keys love of writing is what shines through in the end. Kirkus Reviews
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Like Flannery OConnor meets Chuck Klosterman meets Seinfeld, Harrison Scott Key is one of Southern Gothics great new hopes. Southern Living
Harrison Scott Key is the author of two memoirs, including Congratulations, Who Are You Again? (Harper Perennial), a true story about his American Dream to do something creative and meaningful with his life and how that dream nearly obliterated every meaningful thing in his life. His first memoir, The World's Largest Man, a true story about what it's like to be related to insane people from Mississippi, including the surprise revelation on the last page that he is also insane and the book is a hallucination, won the Thurber Prize for American Humor, a major literary award, according to his mother.
Harrison's humor and nonfiction have appeared in The Best American Travel Writing, Oxford American, Outside, The New York Times, McSweeney's Internet Tendency, Town & Country, The Mockingbird, Salon, Savannah Magazine, Reader's Digest, Image, Southern Living, Gulf Coast, and Creative Nonfiction, as well as a number of magazines that don't pay you anything at all, not even a little, but it was cool, because people who work at magazines are mostly poor, and helping the poor is a priority for Harrison, should he come under scrutiny.
Harrison has lectured, talked, read, performed, etc., around the world for audiences of 0 to 1,000, depending on how many of his mother's friends live in that city. He has spoken at TED, book festivals, bookstores, conferences (for design, writing, religion, medicine, real estate, education), variety shows, radio shows, and universities around the country, as well as retirement communities and at least one religious organization whose members were perfectly courteous up until the end. He has also performed comedy at venues around the U.S., if you include three or four different cities to be "around the U.S."
He holds an M.F.A. in creative nonfiction and a Ph.D. in playwriting and works at SCAD, where he has held appointments as chair of liberal arts, professor of English, professor of writing, and executive dean. He lives in Savannah, Georgia, with his wife and assorted children.
Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and lunch is served at noon. Limited seating provides an intimate experience with the author. In addition to three creative courses by Halls Executive Chef Robyn Guisto, the cash bar will feature specialty cocktails and wines.
Refunds may be issued for any reason up to 24 hours before the event.
