Armstrong and Eliza Beattie built the mansion in 1854 and lived there until both of their deaths. Armstrong died after contracting cholera in 1878 and was soon followed in death by Eliza in 1880. The two never had children so their home passed into the hands of the Ladies Union Benevolence Association for the use of a Home for the Friendless, serving the elderly, homeless and ill of the community. After 100 years of service as the Memorial Home for the Aged, the mansion was used as a group home to house the mentally ill and those who suffered from substance abuse.
As the new owner began renovations, it became abundantly clear that something otherworldly was still lurking in the shadows of Beattie Mansion!
Amazingly clear EVPs (electronic voice phenomena), disembodied voices, singing and laughter, shadow figures, full-bodied apparitions, doors slamming, piano musicthe Beattie Mansion is full of mystery and intrigue and a few spirits that are waiting just for you!
Eliza Beattie has been seen the most often on the second floor. Many believe she is guarding the hallway that connects the two wings. Just be careful if youre a male, Eliza isnt going to be very fond of you! Armstrong has also been seen and heard pacing the hallways and whistling. The couple who spent so many years in the home are still watching over the estate but theyre not alone!
Children have been seen and heard singing, yelling and laughing. Their eerie childlike voices calling out from beyond the grave will leave a lasting impression on your soul. Although theyve been captured mostly on the second floor there have also been several shadow figures about the size of a child witnessed in the kitchen area. The same area is known for a tall man that often walks through the kitchen as well.
For the most part, the spirits seem welcoming and eager to communicate with their living guests. But there is a dark male presence in the basement who taunts guests and whose laugh will cause tingles to run up your spine. Hes not alone down there, people have also seen a tall man in overalls and a white shirt staring out the basement window into the parking lot.
People have been poked, grabbed, pushed and scratched. Are the spirits playing rough or just trying to get your attention? The only way youre going to find out is to come and ask them yourself! Will you be brave enough to face down the dark man in the basement during a lone vigil?
Location History:
Armstrong and Eliza Beattie built the Beattie Mansion in 1854 in St. Joseph, Missouri. The home has undergone renovation and additional construction since that time, but the original Mansion still stands as the East Wing. Armstrong was a prominent citizen whose keen business sense helped to build the town. His prestige led him to be elected to five terms as Mayor of St. Josepha feat that has yet to be achieved again.
Armstrong died at the age of 66 in 1878, succumbing to the effects of a cholera outbreak. His wife, Eliza, followed him in death just two years later. Since the couple did not have any children, their home was sold to the Ladies Union Benevolence Association. The once illustrious mansion that stood as a monument to the successful endeavors of the Beattie family was designated as a Home for the Friendless, serving as a place those on the margins of society. They served the homeless, the elderly and infirm, and a vast array of people that needed assistance in living daily life.
Through a private donation, they were able to build what is now the West Wing and concentrate their care on their elderly population. For the next 100 years, the Memorial Home for the Aged served the people of St. Joseph and the surrounding communities. In 1995 the organization realized that the facility was outdated, and their residents needed more modern technology and accommodations to meet their needs. At that time, the Mansions use transitioned to use as a group home for the mentally ill and substance addicts. Until it was purchased in 2004 to be converted into a Bed and Breakfast.
Many attempts were made at renovations, but the restless spirits did not seem to enjoy the improvements that were being made to their eternal home. Paranormal activity spiked, and several contractors walked out on the job refusing to finish. Although most of the deaths that have occurred over the years were natural, one must conclude that when so many people pass into the afterlife in one location that it opens up a portal through which spirits can pass freely.
The caretaker heard the reports of disembodied voices, shadow figures and full-bodied apparitions and realized that there were many mysteries that needed to be unlocked. Since that time several paranormal teams have been eager to visit and investigate the spirits of Beattie Mansion.
The spirits that seem to appear the most often have been identified through different means of science-based research and paranormal investigation. Eliza Beattie is the spirit that encountered most often as if she still is overseeing what happens in her home. It has been the experience of many guests and investigators that Eliza is not very fond of men. Perhaps she finds masculine energy threateningor maybe she just prefers the ladies!
Armstrong has also made an appearance or two at the Beattie Mansion. People have heard him whistling and wandering the East Wing. There are also children that have been heard yelling, laughing and playing. And occasionally, the melodious sounds of a pianist can be heard at all times of the night.
If all the hauntings were as light as the children and the Beatties all would be well and good. But it is rare that you only find the good. In the basement of the Mansion there is a darker male presence. Its this particular spirit that seems the most agitated by the presence of people in the home. Hes been known to taunt the guests and several folks attribute the scratches and shoving to this man. Is he just a disgruntled spirit that is from the elderly home or perhaps his presence is a remnant from the group home for the mentally illthe only way to find out is to come and investigate for yourself!
