Love from California to Louisiana
Dayna Kurtz and Vicki Randle present a concert in support of the New Orleans Abortion Fund, which supports women from all over the state in receiving services from one of the 3 remaining facilities in Louisiana.
"Dayna Kurtz is the kind of artist who inspires wild-eyed zealotry among her fans, and there are three reasons for it: One, she's an artist's artist, one whose whiskeyed, determined alto often earns her comparisons with Nina Simone; two, while Europeans adore her, she's obscenely underappreciated in her own country; and three, her songs, which straddle a difficult space between jazz, rock, and folk, are pure poetry. Her latest release owes its artist instant stardom. If that's unattainable, it should at least earn her the one descriptor all serious artists strive for: important. - Tammy La Gorce ALL MUSIC GUIDE
from Vicki: "I grew up listening to folk & rock music, but people expected and harangued me to sing R&B and soul music (because, duh, Im black. I guess they felt like it was false advertising.) which my jazz snob father refused to let me listen to at home, So I literally taught myself how to sing like a black girl. Way better tips.
I am a progressive political evangelist and when Im not arguing with people on Facebook, my political views wend themselves into my song lyrics, whether with my Alt Rock/Funk band Skip The Needle or my solo acoustic performances where they reside alongside accounts of my disastrous dating life.
Vicki has toured or recorded with George Benson, Dr. John, Wayne Shorter, Kenny Loggins, Herbie Hancock, Aretha Franklin, Todd Rundgren and Mavis Staples, and was a member of the Tonight Show Band with Jay Leno for 18 years.
