The Yeomen of the Guard by Gilbert and Sullivan
The Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento is excited to present Gilbert and Sullivan's The Yeomen of the Guard with full orchestra at the 24th Street Theatre, August 16-25. Reported to be their favorite collaboration, Yeomen is a relatively short comic opera full of gorgeous music, humorous romance, strange adventure and unrequited love.
Set in the Tower of London during the sixteenth century, the plot concerns Colonel Fairfax (Robert Vann/Anthony Tavianini), a man of science and former soldier, who has been sentenced to death on a false charge of sorcery by his greedy cousin. To his rescue comes the Meryll family, Sergeant Meryll (Mike Baad), his son, Leonard (Samuel Palmer) and his daughter, Phoebe (Paige Kelly/Rikki Pratt). The three conspire to seduce the jailer, Wilfred Shadbolt (Eric Piotrowski), for the prison-cell keys in order to free Fairfax and pass him off as Leonard who was to become a Yeoman.
Unaware of this scheme, Fairfax, with the help of the Lieutenant of the Tower (Tim Power) plots to secretly marry before his death and thus prevent his cousin from acquiring a sizable estate. A pair of strolling entertainers, Jack Point (Charlie Baad) and Elsie Maynard(Carley Neill/ Jadi Galloway) are rescued from a mob of villagers by the Lieutenant, and he fortuitously finds the perfect bride for the Colonel in Elsie with a promise of 100 crown reward to help her sick mother. Reluctantly Jack Point agrees as well, and Elsie is blindfolded and covertly wed to the condemned Colonel.
Later that night, as the crowd awaits his execution, news of Fairfaxs escape throws the Tower...and multiple story lines...into confusion. Elsie is now married to a man on the lam she has never seen. Fairfax, in the guise of Leonard, cant help but rescue Elsie and seduce her into a conflicted love. And Jack Point, who himself planned to marry Elsie, is heart-broken with losing her. To experience these plot complications worked out in Gilbertian fashion and hear some of Sullivan's finest music with a live orchestra conducted by Anne-Marie Endres, come join us August 16 25 at the 24th Street Theatre for Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento's The Yeomen of the Guard.
