Thine Eyes by Subcircle
Engine, a community arts organization based in Biddeford, Maine, will present an original site-specific work entitled "Thine Eyes" by Subcircle, a performance company based in Philadelphia on August 1-3, at 7pm daily. The performance will be created in two unique and interesting spaces, filmed in the historic Marble Block with a live performance and premiere of the film in Building 13 of the former WestPoint Home mill, located at 100 Main Street (intersection of Alfred and Main).

The Marble Block was donated to Engine by its most recent owner, the Reny family of Maine. Originally the O.H. Staples department store, then later Fishman's Department store, and finally a Renys department store, the circa-1890 building features a hall on the third floor with a stage and a standing balcony that was used for a variety of entertainment including boxing and vaudeville. Building 13 of the former WestPoint Home mill , now part of the Pepperell Mills Campus, was one of the last mills to be shuttered in 2010, closing that chapter on Biddeford's textile history. The mill and the downtown are inextricably woven together as one supported the other for years in Biddeford's heyday. "Thine Eyes" will be a fundraiser for Engine, as the organization begins renovations on the 18,000 square foot Marble Block.

The new work by Subcircle will be the continuation of the dance company's exploration of how space holds memory. Subcircle will spend two weeks investigating what events or memories live in both spaces and what responses these unknown histories may trigger. Subcircle is the collaboration between choreographer Niki Cousineau and designer Jorge Cousineau. This summer they will bring three additional performers with them: Biddeford Pool native Scott McPheeters, and Beau Hancock, Christy Lee, and Christina Zani from Philadelphia.

Subcircle began work on "Thine Eyes" earlier this spring during rehearsals in Philadelphia and has begun on-site rehearsals with all performers.

Since 1998, Subcircle has been transforming theatrical and site-specific spaces, merging dance, sound, set design, lighting and film. From abandoned bank buildings, to unused church spaces, and works for stage and film, the company works in the crevices of dance theatershrinking and growing depending on the project at hand. depending on the project at hand.
