Reading the Farm brings together agricultural service providers from different backgrounds to engage in a peer-to-peer learning experience aimed at addressing a case-study farm's sustainability challenges.
The Reading the Farm Program was developed at the University of Connecticut in 2006 for the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture, Research and Education program.
Oregon Tilth is organizing this event as part of our on-going efforts to support farm viability.
This event is has been made possible with support from a USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant thru the Oregon Department of Agriculture.
Here's what to expect at the RTF event:
RTF participants will receive background material about the farm in advance of the event. We ask that you read the material in preparation for the event.
On Sept 4th, you will join up with a group of other service providers for this full day RTF event at 47th Avenue Farm's Grand Island farm site.
You'll spend the morning touring the farm and meeting with Laura Masterson, farmer/owner. We'll encourage participants to engage in inquiry and observation, taking special note of the different considerations that emerge because of the multi-disciplinary expertise represented by participants.
Following an informal lunch, participants will regroup and spend the afternoon in facilitated discussions focused on sharing observations about the farm and brainstorming opportunities to address the sustainability challenges identified by this farm. We'll wrap up by sharing observations and any recommendations we can offer to the host farmer.
