FOGHOUSE CONCERTS PRESENTS - PHOEBE HUNT
Sounds Like: Regina Spector -- quirky songs held together by an acoustic sound.
For Fans of: Sara Watkins, Carrie Rodriguez, & Abigail Washburn
Why you Should Pay Attention: An accomplished Americana instrumentalist with foundations in jazz and swing music, Phoebe makes an impressive creative leap with her new record. Its the culmination of a five year journey that has taken her from her Austin roots through Music Row, Brooklyn, and even to India to study with seventh-generation master violinist Kala Ramnath. Along the way, Phoebe found her voice and delivered her most inspired set of songs to date -- the soundtrack to her self-discovery.
Meeting in the 70s at a yoga ashram on Manhattans Lower West Side, her parents spent seven years as disciples of Guru Swami Satchidananda, famous for having been the opening speaker at the 1969 Woodstock Festival. Years later, pregnant with Phoebe, her mom felt a strong compulsion to name her child Shanti, a Hindi word meaning peace. There was only one minor complication she had already promised the childs paternal grandmother, Phoebe, that she would be named after her. In a compromise, Hunts parents named their child Shanti Phoebe Hunt, but out of deference to the grandmother, she would grow up being called Phoebe. Years later, on the 2016 trip that would inspire the creation of Shantis Shadow, Hunt and her husband (and mandolin-playing bandmate) Dominick Leslie entered the meditation retreat in India, surrendered their possessions, and, with only a wool blanket given to them upon arrival, committed to a sequestered ten-day vow of silence. It was during that stint at the retreat that Grandma Phoebe passed away
Shantis Shadow marks an arrival for Phoebe Hunt, whose artistic and personal journeys have deep story lines. These masterfully crafted songs are brought to life by the musicians Phoebe has gathered, each a virtuoso in their own right. Currently, the gatherers are Roy Williams (guitar), Dominick Leslie (mandolin), Sam Reider (piano/accordion), Nick Falk (drums) and Jared Engel/Dave Speranza (upright bass). The album, "Shantis Shadow" is garnished with additional guests who are dear to Phoebes heart: Stephanie Hunt and Jazz Mills - vocal harmonies, Alex Hargreaves and Nathaniel Smith - strings. Each of these musicians is a leader in their own right and have won awards and toured the world with some of the best musicians on the planet.
What She Says: "Music is a journey that will take you from point a to point b and all the places in between."
Appalachian-style fiddle chops with Texas twang, Indian ragas, gypsy jazz, unfamiliar time signatures and the free-spirited fun of a jam band leader -Rolling Stone ..But what holds it all together and sets it apart is her voice like the sirens of old, leaves you no desire to escape its warm embrace. -Twangville
