Studies N Blackness: Afro-Retro Juju
Baraka de Soleil / D UNDERBELLY - "Koool-aid Luv Odyssey" Midwest Premiere! A vibrant performance collage of afros, saturated colors, raucous testifying and ambient soul-funk soundscapes. This psychedelic rock spectacle reflects the likes of Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, and Rick James, exploring the syrupy sweetness of an iconic substance that comes in only one real flavah - RED! Currently based in Brooklyn NY, D UNDERBELLY is an ever-fluid underground network of artists of color, founded in 1997 by Chicago-born Baraka de Soleil. Encompassing spoken word performers to multimedia artists, the group is engaged in developing investigative practices that allow for communal exchange and enlightening discovery. The name references the underbelly of a slave ship, excavating the energy that surfaces from the depths of our human experiences.
