HFS Songwriters Night 2019
Join host and songwriter Patrick Cleary along with this year's featured songwriters Michael Dayvid, Georgia Ruth, Tracy Symons Smith, and Andrew Wakefield for an intimate evening with these musicians in Dell'Arte's Carlo Theater. The box office opens at 6:30pm and doors open at 7pm with the show starting at 7:30pm. $10 general admission, $8 for Humboldt Folklife Members, and children 12 and under are $5.
Patrick Cleary is a Wall St refuge who has spent the last 20+ years playing music and organizing music events such as The Humboldt Folklife Festival. He has performed with groups as diverse as Tofu N Chitlins, the Pilot Rock Ramblers, Wild Iris & the Weeds, and is currently part of That Buckin String Band. He was the first host of the Folklife Songwriter Night and is pleased to return to that role.
Michael Dayvid is a self-styled Adventure Folk artist. His original music includes everything from tender acoustic love songs to epic, cinematic ballads. He began performing in churches as a teenager, and in 2010 he quit his day job and has been performing professionally. For his solo work, Michael holds 8-10 residency gigs throughout the Humboldt County, playing various restaurants and bars on a weekly basis. He also performs with a Celtic folk group called The Gatehouse Well, who just released their 2nd full-length album a few weeks ago. You can find information on all his upcoming shows at michaeldayvid.com/LIVE, or at Facebook.com/MichaelDayvid. Lastly, Michael is excited (and nervous!) to share some unplugged versions of original music that will appear on his upcoming cinematic rock EP, scheduled to release at the end of October 2019 and made possible by the generosity of Arcata's own Mercury Sky Records.
Georgia Ruth is an original singer songwriter with a powerful roots inspired voice that blends Folk, Americana, Blues and Jazz in a combination that seems natural and inspired. She played last year at the Folklife Festival and was a hit. We're pleased that she is returning again this year.
Tracy Symons Smith has used songwriting and playing guitar as a way to process life through all its stages since her early teens. Most of her tunes are gentle reflections of how we move through these moments and offer opportunities for sharing common experiences. Tracy has lived in McKinleyville, CA since 2001. She is member of three local bands: For Folk Sake!, That Buckin String Band, and Dessert First which play regularly throughout the area.
Andrew Wakefield calls his music folk-rock, although it varies quite a bit. As far as writing style, he says that he usually comes up with a melody and the musical framework first, and then either goes to his book of lyrics for ideas or just makes up the lyrics as he goes. He's a guitarist first and a songwriter secondly, so when he plays live he usually does a lot of improvising/soloing. He started playing piano at the age of 6, then took up drums, then finally guitar at age 9. He started songwriting around 13 and hasn't looked back. As a guitarist he's shared the stage with George Clinton, Jeff Sipe, Toubab Krewe, and Claude Coleman of Ween.
Don't miss this great night of music in the lovely Carlo Theater!
