Fri 8 Nov / Carrying Stream Festival - Edinburgh FC / EFC
A very special concert in honour of the late Hamish Henderson's 100th birthday featuring Rab Noakes, Malinky and the Sangstream Choir.
Rab Noakes' 50 year-long career in the music buisness has made him is a force to be reckoned with in the world of music in Scotland and beyond. At the outset of 2018 Rab took part in a series of appearances at Celtic Connections each featuring songs from repertoires other than his own songs. In recent years Rab has been receiving lifetime awards from Nordoff-Robbins and Hands up for Trad. These recognise the, now lengthy, contribution made by an artist of substance with a 21st century attitude combined with a long memory. If you havent seen Rab before, its time to correct that. If you have, you can rest assured all the qualities youve enjoyed are alive and well.
Continuing on their distinctive mission as contemporary champions of traditional Scots song, Malinky released their 20th Anniversary Album 'Handsel', (Greentrax Recordings), in June 2019.
The band's current four-piece line-up, centred on the outstanding voices of Fiona Hunter, Steve Byrne, and Mark Dunlop also features award-winning composer and fiddler Mike Vass, with instrumentation including bouzouki, guitar, whistle, bodhrán and cello. One of the great traditional Scottish bands (Folk World)
Sangstream Choir was founded by Christine Kydd in 1997 as part of the Scots Music Group. It became independent in 1999, remaining affiliated to the SMG. Most of their songs come from the Scots tradition though they do sometimes sing more contemporary Scots songs.
The choir's current Musical Director is Robyn Stapleton, well-known traditional singer, song tutor and performer. Robyn was the 2014 BBC Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year.
Videos recorded of songs arranged by their previous very talented Musical Director, Corrina Hewat (2015 to 2018) are Michael Marra's song, Frida Kahlo; Jean Ritchie's, The Cool of the Day; Andy M Stewart's,The Queen of Argyll. These are now on the choir's YouTube Channel.
There are also audio recordings of songs arranged by Mairi Campbell who was the choir's wonderful Musical Director for 12 years from 2003: Keep You in Peace, Christmas Song, Baltic Street, When the Snows of Winter Fall, Cauld Blaws the Wind and Hard Winter.
Sangstream meets on Thursday evenings during school term time, from 7-9 p.m. at James Gillespies High School, Lauderdale Street, Edinburgh.
