Nonagram with Owen Clapp
Nonagram is an LA-based jazz trio featuring Greg Uhlmann on guitar, Owen Clapp on bass, and Colin McDaniel on drums. Greg, a Chicago native, met Colin in high school when they both attended the Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony. Greg went on to study at the California Institute of the Arts, where he met Owen, who attends UCLA. Colin went on to spend a year at the Brubeck Fellowship Program as a member of the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet. He now attends UCLA, where he met Owen. The three musicians began playing together in 2011 and have since toured through California. They play originals as well as standards inspired by musicians such as guitarist Bill Frisell, Darek Oles, Nick Drake, and Paul Motian. Drawing influence from jazz, American folk music, Western classical music, and West African music, they have formed a unique sound of their own.

"[Nonagram] employs jazz instrumentation to execute an offshoot brand of original music. In threesome, [Uhlmann's] more prominent guitar incorporates olden British countryside folk as much as turn-of-the-millennium North American post-rock  stylistically exhibiting the minstrel-ish tendencies of early Bibio, and the calm, meandering noodle of a modal opus by Do Make Say Think. [Nonagram's] original music in performance is tonally and dynamically expeditious while texturally soft and inviting, a comfortable challenge that easily entices."   Scottie McNiece (Curator for Gilt Bar)

Owen Clapp is a member of the group Nonagram, which will be performing at the San Geronimo Valley Community Center on August 21. Clapp grew up in Woodacre and attended Lagunitas School, San Domenico, and Sir Francis Drake High School. In high school he was a member of the Sir Francis Drake High School Latin Jazz Ensemble, the SF Jazz High School All-Stars, and the California All-State Jazz ensemble. During his time at UCLA, Clapp studied with Grammy award winning bassist John Clayton as well as legendary jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell and downbeat award winning flautist/composer James Netwon. Clapp also toured nationally and internationally with jazz and hip-hop groups while attending UCLA. After graduating from UCLA, where he studied on scholarship, he plans to continue working as a musician in the Los Angeles area. This will be his first performance in the San Geronimo Valley since high school. Guitarist Greg Uhlmann and drummer Colin McDaniel are excited to be embarking on a four city West coast tour with Nonagram, the last day of which will be spent in legendary Fantasy Studios best known for recording a diverse array of groups including Journey, Green Day, Bill Frisell and Bill Evans.
