Color Rendering of Jewelry Workshop with Rémy Rotenier
*Limited to 15 Students*
Friday, October 11 - Sunday, October 13
9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Lunch provided each day

This three-day course will consist of one and a half days of black and white pencil sketching and two days of watercolor rendering of metals and gemstones.

The class starts with reviewing basic black and white sketching and rendering skills, understanding and depicting the difference between opaque, metallic and transparent materials. We will learn six different points-of-view to draw rings: from the top, through the finger, profile, 45 degree perspective, lifted perspective, and designing a ring around a gemstone. These techniques help build confidence to create powerful drawings live, in front of a customer and quickly communicate ideas. Learning to be comfortable with these skills helps the creative process, and designs will flow more organically. We will understand how choosing the right angle makes conveying an idea much easier.

The class continues with basic techniques for rendering lustrous metals and brilliant gemstones with watercolor in the classic French tradition. Through masterful demonstrations, students observe metal, gemstones and other materials come to life.

Students will receive a full set of handouts and a design kit, which will help them practice on their own. Rotenier will share his jewelry design techniques, which will be helpful to jewelers and sales associates who want to feel confident presenting ideas in a more professional manner, as well as expressing their client's ideas as they are discussed.

Color Rendering of Jewelry with Rémy Rotenier illuminates hand painting techniques for dynamic designs. In the classic European tradition this course goes beyond basic techniques for rendering lustrous metals and brilliant gemstones in professional-quality presentation paintings. Through the masterful demonstrations jewelers and designers will learn to bring metal, gemstones, and other materials to life in full color.

Paris-born jewelry designer and artist Rémy Rotenier is a passionate third generation designer, the first in his family to work in jewelry. He is well known for his extensive experience in all jewelry categories with some of the most famous jewelers worldwide. Rotenier received his bachelors degree in jewelry design in Paris while working for Cristofol, a workshop catering to the finest names in European high-end jewelry.

He holds a graduate gemologist degree from the French Institute of Gemology (ING) in Paris and passed Diamond Grading with GIA in New York. In 1990 he was hired by Tiffany & Co. in New York to be one of their three staff designers. Five years later he moved to New Mexico to become design director for Kabana. Since 2006 Rotenier has been directing and managing Rémy Design, a premier destination for jewelry creations, where he focuses on designing collections, teaching his famous rendering techniques in black and white and color, and custom design for private clientele.
