Color Rendering of Jewelry Workshop with Rémy Rotenier
*Limited to 15 Students* Friday, October 11 - Sunday, October 13 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Lunch provided each day
This three-day course will consist of one and a half days of black and white pencil sketching and two days of watercolor rendering of metals and gemstones.
The class starts with reviewing basic black and white sketching and rendering skills, understanding and depicting the difference between opaque, metallic and transparent materials. We will learn six different points-of-view to draw rings: from the top, through the finger, profile, 45 degree perspective, lifted perspective, and designing a ring around a gemstone. These techniques help build confidence to create powerful drawings live, in front of a customer and quickly communicate ideas. Learning to be comfortable with these skills helps the creative process, and designs will flow more organically. We will understand how choosing the right angle makes conveying an idea much easier.
The class continues with basic techniques for rendering lustrous metals and brilliant gemstones with watercolor in the classic French tradition. Through masterful demonstrations, students observe metal, gemstones and other materials come to life.
Students will receive a full set of handouts and a design kit, which will help them practice on their own. Rotenier will share his jewelry design techniques, which will be helpful to jewelers and sales associates who want to feel confident presenting ideas in a more professional manner, as well as expressing their client's ideas as they are discussed.
Color Rendering of Jewelry with Rémy Rotenier illuminates hand painting techniques for dynamic designs. In the classic European tradition this course goes beyond basic techniques for rendering lustrous metals and brilliant gemstones in professional-quality presentation paintings. Through the masterful demonstrations jewelers and designers will learn to bring metal, gemstones, and other materials to life in full color.
