Fool for Love
Fool for Love ~The scene is a stark motel room at the edge of the Mojave Desert. May (Caitlin Lowerre), a disheveled young woman, sits dejectedly on a rumpled bed while Eddie (Ryan de Quintal), a rough-spoken rodeo performer, crouches fiddling with his riding gear. When he attempts to console May, who is distressed by Eddie's frequent absences and love affairs, she seems, at first, to soften, but then changes...recriminations pour out...they cannot get along with or without each other. The other characters, a young man Martin (Vincent Ramirez) who is trying to gain her friendship and affection enters the stage as a force. The Old Man (Fred Mancuso) sits in a rocking chair sipping his whiskey while breaking dimensional boundaries. The story is revealed within layers of dialog between what is spoken and not that capture moments of nuance that crescendo...stripping back perception and embracing the raw force in nature that shakes the foundation of life, leading one to a desperate plea to truth and reality itself in revelation and grasping inner reflection. Shakespeare mused in his Sonnet about love 600 years ago "Let me not to the Marriage of true minds admit impediments, Love is not Love which alters when an alteration finds or bends with the remover to remove, oh no it is an ever fixed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken, it is the star to every wondering bark whose worths unknown although its height be taken, Love is not times fool though rosy lips and cheeks within his bending sickles compass comes, Love alters not within his brief hours and weeks but bears it out even to the edge of doom, If this be error and upon me proved, I never writ, nor no man ever Loved." (William Shakespeare); or the single from U2's album, a few years after "Fool for Love" premiered in 1983, Joshua Tree "With or without you" with an ironic setting in a similar part of the same desert.
