WORKSHOPS: Hair, Neck, and Head - How to Integrate Hair Technique Into Your Dance Like a Pro! Thursday, July 4th, 12-3 PM "Hair is such an amazing and useful tool in belly dance -- why not make the most of it? In this workshop we'll go over theory on the anatomic connections between scapula, chest, shoulders, neck and head, and how to incorporate them in a proper and healthy way in combinations that involve hair. I'll show you some really simple exercises on how to open the chest and loosen up the upper body area involved in hair circles. We'll also talk about the length and texture of hair, how these qualities influence the motion created by the dancer, and advantages and challenges with various hair types." --Gyongyi
Layering: The Key to Creating Something New Friday, July 5th, 7-10 PM "Do you sometimes feel you lack fancy, trendy, or pretty combinations or movements? Or do you feel that what you know is just "not enough"? Please allow me to prove you wrong. In my opinion, there aren't "new moves" to belly dance, or any kind of a dance, only new and creative ways to use the basics. In this workshop, I show you how to apply a very effective and understandable movement analysis system called the Laban method for creating combinations and choreography. We'll cover some theory, and implement into practice. We'll learn a short combination and use it in three different belly dance styles. And I'll share my tricks, tips, and concepts on how I've used layering to adapt combinations to different styles, and how I've customized to my own personal style. I'd like you to discover the fact that anyone is capable of using this method. It's so much fun and can teach you more about the body than you would imagine! Use your body and existing knowledge as an endless source of combinations, new motions, and movements." --Gyongyi
Embody Your Style the Way Only You Can! Sunday, July 7th, 1-4 PM (after RakasaFit) "Have you ever noticed that the same movement or technique that works so well for some dancers just doesn't look as good on you? Or maybe the opposite -- you simply nail something from the first moment and others struggle with it for years? It's totally normal, because belly dance isn't about standardized images of movement like ballet. My experiences show that isolation, turns, or a simple pose can look so different depending on body type, size, and ratios. This workshop will cover the five primary female body types and analyze and adjust basic movements according to the individual needs of workshop participants. I'll also provide some hints, insights, and advice on how to use the most flattering combinations according to your physical and emotional features." --Gyongyi
Vintage Choreography: A Journey Back to the Golden Era Wednesday, July 10th, 7-10 PM "Learn a clean vintage-inspired choreography, and amaze your audience with a mesmerizing and mystical experience! In this workshop we'll do a 3.5 minute dance piece in which we'll mix cheekiness with graceful elegance. My aim is not only to teach the movements but also to share all details and concepts that went into building this choreography." --Gyongyi
