31st Annual Charles Sawtelle Memorial Mountain Jam with Che Apalache, The Lonesome Days , Avenhart and Artist-at-Large Bridget Law
Featuring Che Apalache, The Lonesome Days, Avenhart and Artist-at-Large, Bridget Law.
The Charles Sawtelle Memorial Mountain Jam, aka The Charles, is named for beloved Hot Rize guitarist, Charles Sawtelle, who helped start the event in 1989 and was a great supporter of KGNU Community Radio. After his passing in 1999, the station renamed the event in his memory.
Celebrating its 31st anniversary, The Charles is a family-friendly mini-festival of al fresco bluegrass and Americana music aimed at music fans who enjoy clear mountain air, dazzling acoustic music and great food in a spectacular outdoor setting.
It's a favorite annual gathering not only for the top-tier acoustic bands but also for the smoky Texas barbecue and trimmings, side dishes, home-baked pies and cookies, refreshing beverages for adults and teetotalers alike, and the camaraderie typical of KGNU community events.
Che Apalache is a four-man string band based in Buenos Aires with members from Argentina, Mexico and the U.S. They play Latingrass, combining bluegrass with Latin American styles. The groups founder, Joe Troop (fiddle), is a North Carolinian multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and composer who moved to Argentina in 2010. While patiently carving out a niche in the local music scene, Troop taught bluegrass and old-time music for a living. It was there he met Pau Barjau (banjo), Franco Martino (guitar) and Martin Bobrik (mandolin), his most dedicated students. They quickly became picking buddies and in 2013 decided to hit the stage.
The Lonesome Days is a five-piece, high energy, modern bluegrass ensemble from Denver featuring Jonny Miller (mandolin), Sam Parks (guitar), Todd Lilienthal (banjo), Bradley Morse (bass) and Eve Panning (fiddle). Blending heartfelt songwriting and powerful vocals with precise instrumentation and undeniable groove, The Lonesome Days has charged its way to the forefront of the Colorado bluegrass scene. Songwriting is a major focus for the band, but listeners can always expect a unique repertoire of standard bluegrass and other cross-genre covers. With the recent addition of fiddle to the band, The Lonesome Days are carving out their niche in the national bluegrass arena.
Avenhart is a Denver-based folk band that twists a foundation of bluegrass into their love for soul, Americana, pop and indie rock, creating a unique soundscape that features d soulful harmonies, intricate arrangements and heartfelt lyrics. The six-piece string band met at CU Denver and formed a bond based on their love of Tony Rice and the Stanley Brothers. Members are Andrea Parés (vocals), Payden Widner (guitar), Alex Drapela (banjo), Olivia Shaw (fiddle and vocals), Clint Koury (mandolin and vocals) and Gil Clark (bass).
