Based on the playwrights own experience with their father, your own kind of normal is an intimate portrayal of schizophrenia, queerness and healing. A re-embodying of the memories most crucial for a childs understanding of their relationship with their father. The fathers mental health and the childs queerness sometimes come into conflict. Their memories take center stage, as the child attempts to reconcile the pain and hurt they caused each other. Through the embodied process of remembering, the father and child learn how to reconcile their understandings of each other and work to heal the damage they have caused. An earlier version of the play received a staged reading at Dixon Place in October 2018.
