Samurai Study Workshop (Ages 12 & over)
Are you fascinated by all things SAMURAI? There are a lot of misperceptions about what the Samurai philosophy is all about. Some common stereotypes are that the "Samurai Way" is to live to fight, or to not care about dying in battle. But is any of this true? What basic truths did these stereotypes develop from?
This short workshop will cover the basics as well as the essence of Samurai philosophy, which is as useful in daily life today as it was hundreds of years ago in martial Japan. Bushido encompassed many aspects of life outside the battlefield. True Samurai focused on values that can benefit anyone who applies them to daily life in the modern world: Courage, Generosity, Politeness, Sincerity, Loyalty, and Self-Mastery.
The Samurai way of life was a form of art in itself, with its focus on achieving an existence that was beautiful despite hardships, danger, and risk. It's no wonder that this philosophy influenced so deeply the formation of Japanese culture. Come join us to learn how you can put the Samurai's "life enhancement skills" (including demonstration and practice of the Samurai breathing technique) to use in your own personal growth and development. The instructors are a father-and-daughter pair descended from many generations of a Samurai clan. They have kept up the pure traditions of their forebears and their heartfelt mission is to share the positive aspects of Samurai culture in a way that everyone can apply in their lives today.
- Presenter: Ban Ebisawa, Faculty Member, International Budo University; Director, International Samurai Association
