Mark Stuart went to the finest of music schools, earning his Bachelors Degree listening to and admiring his uncles guitar playing and his Dad's fiddling, as well as the greats - Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, John Fogerty, The Beatles and many more. By age 15, he was well on his way to his Masters Degree, playing in the School of Honky Tonks and Beer Joints in and around Nashville in his Dads band. Managing to stay awake in high school after playing late nights polishing every riff and bend and vocal chord, he would go on by age 17 to form his own band, make a record, and still find the time to play on the road as lead guitar and vocals for acts like Freddy Fender and more taking him into his 20's.
Mark never considered doing anything else. He was in off the road when he met Stacey [;Earle]; in 1992 at a songwriters night in Nashville. They knew that night it was one of them things that is just meant to be. They were married in 1993 while raising 2 children from Staceys first marriage. It would be quite a balancing act at that time raising a family and trying to make a living along with all the other stuff that came with getting by, but we managed Stacey says.
Mark and Stacey both spent time on the road playing in Stacey's brother's band, Steve Earle & the Dukes. Stacey will tell you that she learned almost all the best of her musicianship from Mark, exploring a wide range of influences, from blues to folk to rockabilly to country. They still learn from each other every day. A great songwriter and musician never should stop learning.
After many years on the Americana/Folk circuit, as a solo performer, as a duo with Stacey, as well as sideman stints with Steve Forbert, Freddy Fender, Steve Earle and Joan Baez, Stuart has cultivated a very rounded performance. Onstage, his focus is on the songs he has penned and recorded, delivered with a soulful singing voice and highly memorable guitar playing. His show consists of storytelling, great guitar chops, and songs that draw from his rock, blues, country, and folk music roots. His career has repeatedly taken him to all of the USA, Canada, Europe, and the United Kingdom, playing coffehouses to festival stages and everything in between. When not on the road, Mark stays busy as a session player, conducting guitar clinics and, as co-owner of Gearle Records, producing and running a label.
