Pandit Deobrat Mishra, Sitar/Surbahar artist: August 11, 2019
Deobrat Mishra is one of the most energetic and innovative Sitar artists in India. Refinement, melodic and rhythmic complexity are some of the features of his lively style of playing.

Born in 1976, he represents the 11th generation of the Benares Gharana tradition. When he was a child, he studied Tabla with his mother, Pramila Mishra, granddaughter of the well-known Tabla player Pandit Baiju Mishra. He started to study vocal music with his father at the age of five and began his Sitar training a year later. That same year, after only six months of practice, he performed on stage for the first time. Five years later, he played for All India Radio.

Since 1994, he has been touring throughout Europe with his father. In that same year, he won an award as best young Sitar player of India. In 2000, he received the Jewels of Sound Award in Mumbai. His several projects include music workshops, solo performances for radio and television, international annual tours, as well as world music concerts with Indian and European artists. Moreover, he is the organizer of cultural events and coordinator of didactic work at the Academy of Indian Classical Music, the school he founded in 2006 along with his father, Pandit Shivnath Mishra.

Deobrat received a MA degree in Sitar from Prayag Sangit Samiti in Allahabad. He is visiting professor at Conservatory of Vienna, Conservatory of Milan, University of Sussex and University of Chichester in England

He has given music workshops in Indian classical music at Vienna University, Milan Music Conservatory, Vicenza(Italy) Conservatory, Royal Danish Academy (Denmark) and many other music schools and universities where he has lectured on Indian classical music.

Deobrat has an energetic and innovative playing style, with features of selectivity, melody and rhythmic complexity. He is one of the few Indian artists who not only plays classical Indian music but also masters in world Fusion music, since 1995. He regularly performs with western Jazz musicians which makes him a unique Sitar Artist.

This tour will support the music school run by Deobrat Mishra and his father Pandit Shivnath Mishra, in Varanasi  India.
The Benares Academy of Indian Classical Music

Fostering access and inclusion for children of all communities to receive classical music lessons, Indian classical dance lessons, and the development of community, confidence, and belonging.

Deobrat is traveling with his talented nephew, Tabla Player Prashant Mishra; one of the best young Tabla players of the Benares Music Tradition. When he was five, he started to learn tabla with the family member Pt. Biru Mishra of Varanasi. He also learned tabla from Late Pt. Chakkan Lal Mishra (Student of Great Tabla player Pt. Anokhelal Mishra.) In 2004, he won first prize in the Tabla competition organized by Sangeet Natak Academy, Uttar Pradesh, India.
