Underground Hip-Hop TRY DYING 001 __________________________________
billy woods (NYC; of Armand Hammer)
billy woods is an artist who defies easy categorization. He claims Washington, D.C. as his hometown but has spent nearly all his adult life in New York City. He was born in the U.S. but spent much of his childhood in Africa and the West Indies as the second child of a Jamaican intellectual and a would-be Marxist revolutionary. On the mic, woods is no less a conundrum, possessed of versatile flows and not only an ability to tackle topics other artists wouldnt imagine, but bring unique perspectives to the familiar ones. After spending much of the 2000s as half of the long-defunct Super Chron Flight Brothers, woods struck out on his own with 2012s audacious mission statement, History Will Absolve Me (HWAM). An album two years in the making, History was a Molotov cocktail of sarcastic fury, with production to match its uncompromising vision. 2013 saw woods collaborating with producer Blockhead on the darkly humorous LP, Dour Candy. A noteworthy about-face from HWAM, Dour Candy garnered praise for its understated tone and wry wit, paired with Blockheads subtle craftsmanship. That same year, woods and fellow NYC artist Elucid joined forces as Armand Hammer and released the incendiary Race Music. In the years that followed, woods has released a steady stream of critically acclaimed projects, both as a solo artist (Today, I Wrote Nothing; Known Unknowns), and with Armand Hammer (Furtive Movements EP, ROME, Paraffin). His latest is Hiding Placesa collaboration with producer Kenny Segal and woods first solo project since 2017. The album reveals a visionary artist at the height of his powers: violent, hilarious, enraged, and resigned. This is the grim work of unearthing that which is buried, of pulling aside the curtain and daring to step into the darkness. The works terrifying beauty arrives with the very first bar and reverberates long after the albums devastating conclusion.
TABLEEK (Springfield, MA; of Maspyke)
Initially signing with Head Up/Elektra Records, Tableek spent years refining his style and building a worldwide following with his crew Maspyke (Roddy Rod, Hanif Jamiyl,TABLEEK). From 1998-2006, Maspyke dropped two LP's, countless singles and collaborations, and worldwide underground classics including "Step," "Truth In Position," "54th Regiment," "Played List" and others. With Maspyke, Tableek was heard on storied labels Om, Rawkus, 7Heads, and Bukarance Records, garnering features and write-ups in XXL, Urb, XLR8TR, Stress, and Europe publications such as Big Daddy, Hiphop Connection, and Straight No Chaser. TABLEEK has since created a new venture with a group of handpicked artists called BurntBerry. Under this new umbrella, music production, touring, distribution, marketing and design are all under one roof. Continued collaboration with some of the most innovative artists in the U.S. (One Be Lo, Stic Man from Dead Prez, Declaim, Sadat X, Zion I, and more) and across Europe and Japan has allowed people to discover TABLEEK in a way previously not seen. His debut album, "Hunting Bald Eagles..and Other Ghetto Tales," was Bukarance's first success, with two singles reaching #1 on two respected independent radio charts in the U.S., and a solid appearances across Europe to support the project.
