Lumberjacks and Logrollers The Day the Earth Froze (Sampo)
Sun Jul 14: 8.30pm
Aleksandr Ptushko Finland & Soviet Union 1959 1h 7m Series - Lumberjacks and Logrollers: Icons of Finnish Cinema
About ** Co-presented with Department of Scandinavian Studies Finnish Studies Program and Nordic Museum **
Just when you thought you had seen all of the Finnish lumberjack films in existence, the genre crossed over into the realm of The Lord of the Rings and Conan the Barbarian. Loosely based on Kalevala, the Finnish national epic poem and one of the most significant works of Finnish national identity, in The Day the Earth Froze a witch steals the sun to spite a community of peaceful loggers that do not want to build her a magic mill. You have probably stopped reading and bought all of the available tickets, but it would be unfair not to mention that the film also features trolls, swans, and beautiful color cinematography.
