A primer in the latest bands emerging from the Bay Area and Portland. A program with terrific variety, musical zest, and innovation. Sometimes, you just have to trust us!
Zion I - Since the release of the debut album, Mind Over Matter in 2000, Zion I has risen up the ranks of independent hip-hop to solidify their standing as one of the most prolific conscious rap groups of the past 2 decades. Boasting a catalog that consists of over two-dozen albums, EPs, mixtapes and collaborations, Zion I (currently consisting solely of MC/producer Zumbi) continues to create inspired music influenced by social & political woes, personal challenges & triumphs as well as family, spirituality and a raw perspective on the world at large.
High Step Society - When the honeyed tones of The Jazz Age meld with hottest beat drops of the new millennium, you get High Step Societys elixir of American Electro Swing. Grandma remembers when she listened to jazz giants on the old Victrola. Grandkids feel the bass beats deep in their chest cavity. Merging dance music from our past with sounds for the future, High Step Society features a shimmering horn section that soars over syncopated high hats and rat-a-tat snare. The kids in the band are electronic music producers as well as educated jazz musicians. Audaciously sophisticated, High Step Society is rethinking jazz with unorthodox arrangements, and bringing a touch of elegance to modern electronic music.
Equipto - Equipto is a member of Bored Stiff, a hip hop group from San Francisco. He has collaborated with other artists such as Andre Nickatina, Berner.
Vocal Slick - The young rapperthen known as Vocabulary Slickturned things around, cleaned himself up and transferred that energy into his music. And in 2003, he not only released his solo debut, Lyrically Conscious, but also formed the group Distant Relatives with his childhood friend, Emotionall. Shortly thereafter, they were joined by rapper Maynee, and released their first full-length, For The Passion, in 2006.
DJ True Justice - True Justice, aka The Man of Steel, has been a pioneer in the Bay Area Hip Hop scene since 1989. In an era where real deejaying skills have become scare, True Justice holds the torch, and is known for tearing clubs down in every city and every town. No stranger to hustle and showmanship, he comes from the era of constantly packing the vinyl crates and being out on the road!
