Jazz at La Zíngara with Bill Bickford
Bill Bickford was born and raised in Norwalk, CT, began to play guitar by listening to blues records a la Lightnin Hopkins and studied with the late Linc Chamberland. He started professionally with local R&B bands before moving to NYC. He attended Berklee School of Music and City College of NY with full scholarships and studied arranging and composition with Mario Davidovsky, Edgar Summerlin and John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Bill freelanced with Jack McDuff, Lonnnie Smith and Larry Elgart. He first appeared on records with trumpeter JohnMcNeil on The Glass Room. Bill has toured many times internationally and has performed and recorded with dozens of artists including Joe Bowe, Mose, Allison, Donald Byrd, Maceo Parker and the JB Horns, and Jim Pepper. He can also be heard with his own trio, bassists Ed Schuller, Jack Walrath, Jim Payne, Jerry Z and with Wolfgang Schmid and Billy Cobham. Bill enjoys teaching students of all ages and abilities, is encouraging and makes each lesson both fun and exciting
Alec Safy is a native of Buffalo, New York and a current resident of the Bronx. He attended SUNY Purchase where he studied privately with Doug Weiss, Scott Colley, and Todd Coolman. Safy has had the opportunity to perform with Gary Smulyan, Jon Faddis, Pete Malinverni, Clifford Barbaro, Don Hahn, Ralph Lalama, Bobby Militello and more. He's worked across the United States, in Canada, and Southeast Asia (including performances at the Hong Kong International Jazz Festival, Beishan Jazz Festival, and Hanoi Opera House), and can be heard in NYC at clubs such as Smalls and Fat Cat.
Drummer, Michael Camacho is quickly making a name for himself in the NYC area having played with a host of Jazz elder statesmen. After graduating with BA from SUNY Purchase's prestigious Jazz studies program, Michael has gone on to perform with the likes of Don Hahn, Bennie Wallace, Ralph Lalama, Jonh Mosca, Mike Karn, Joe Magnarelli, David Dejesus, Donald Vega, Gary Smulyan, Pete Malinverni, Alexis Cole and performed at venues across the tristate area, among them Smalls, Fat Cat, Zinc Bar, Somethin Jazz Club. He is was also featured twice on WBGO representing Purchase College for their annual Jazz Appreciation month celebration. In addition to an active performance schedule Michael teaches privately and with music organizations in the area.
