Fun-sized trips to explore Inside Ledge Lighthouse - Boat Trip & Tour of the lighthouse
Ledge Lighthouse tours have ended for the 2019 season. Thank you!
Explore one of the region's favorite lighthouses. Land by boat at New London Ledge Light and explore inside the lighthouse -- all the way up into the lantern.
NB: Reservations must be made at lease 12 hours in advance.
New London Maritime Society is offering new fun-sized, 6-person boat trips all summer long. The two-hour excursions leave from the Custom House Maritime Museum, 150 Bank St. New London, CT. Matt Lynch, of Water Transit, is the captain. Fees are $60, $50 for NLMS members & children ages 7 to 18.
Our schedule is dictated by the tides and weather. The schedule is posted & updated frequently on this page. Please note: we require three passengers per trip (to cover costs), or we will have to cancel. Please be advised: wind conditions can change quickly and there always is the possibility of last-minute cancellations. Our captain makes the call and your safety is our primary concern.
Logistics: For the Ledge Lighthouse tours, we meet at the Custom House Maritime Museum, 150 Bank Street, New London, CT, for 10-minute orientation before we get on to the boat.
Trips are weather-dependent. *Be certain to check your email two hours prior to the trip for any last-minute changes or cancellations.* We also may cancel if we do not have three or more people registered per trip.
Please make your reservation at least 6 hours in advance of your trip. (If you want to chance signing up at the last-minute, please call 203-444-2884.) Everyone must sign a waiver of liability before boarding. Guest cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance.
Landing at Ledge Light demands a little physical dexterity. You don't have to be a Ninja, but you will have to balance on the edge of a boat and step up to reach the platform.
All passengers are required to wear a life jacket (provided) while in transit, and also must wear appropriate footware: deck shoes or sneakers (no sandals or flip flops).
Our tours leave from downtown New London's Custom House Maritime Museum - just two blocks from the New London Amtrak station. We cruise out past Harbor, Avery Point and North Dumpling lighthouses, along the way passing a submarine factory, two forts, and a USCG station.
Ledge Light (1909), along with the New London Harbor Light (est. 1760, current tower 1801) and Race Rock Light Station (1878) at the opening of Long Island Sound to the Atlantic, create a pathway of beacons leading from the Atlantic Ocean to New London. All three lights are now owned by the New London Maritime Society. Monies raised by these tours support restoration of our local lighthouses.
Tickets are non-refundable unless there is a weather cancellation. Please check your email inbox prior to departing for the dock. We will notify you by email if the tour is canceled. Your ticket includes free admission to the Custom House Maritime Museum ($7 value) and a 10% discount in the Museum Shop.
Food and drink, with the exception of water, is NOT permitted on the boat. For safety reasons, NO alcoholic beverages are permitted.
New London Maritime Society also offers Sunset and Full-Moon Lighthouse Tours on an intimate 6-person boat (search on this site or go to nlmaritimesociety.org). Charter tours, too, are available for groups of up-to 50 - email nlmaritimedirector@gmail.com.
Go to our website nlmaritimesociety.org to learn more. Visit the Ledge Light Foundation http://ledgelighthouse.org/ to learn about their restoration activities and opportunity for large charter for up-to 50 passengers to visit inside Ledge Light.
See you at the Custom House! And thank you for your support of our historic lighthouses.
----------------
Background: Through the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000, New London Maritime Society now owns and preserves the three major lighthouses leading from the Atlantic into our historic port of New London: Race Rock, New London Ledge Light, and New London Harbor Light. This stewardship comes with a mandate from the federal government to provide preservation, education, and public access to the lighthouses. All funds raised from these boat trips go towards lighthouse restoration!
Ledge Light Foundation has worked to preserve Ledge Lighthouse for over 40 years. LLFs accomplishments include both creating a museum at Ledge Light with 7 rooms documenting the history of LL and of the USCG personnel that served on the light, and continued restoration and maintenance to fix and repair mother natures mischief in terms of wind, rain and the unrelenting sea. Over the last two years, LLF has replaced 27 windows (using a matching grant from the State of CT), and applied a new coat of weather proofing sealant to the roof. They have accomplished this with the help of work crews from the Sea Scouts, the US Navy sub base and the USCG Academy.
The US Coast Guard maintains the lighthouse lanterns. All three lights are active aids to navigation.
*Be certain to check your email two hours prior to the trip for any last-minute changes or cancellations.*
See you at the Custom House! And thank you for your support of our historic lighthouses.
