STEVE ODA

Steve began his musical education at the age of seven, learning to play slide guitar and then jazz guitar. A Canadian of Japanese ancestry, his love of creativity through musical expression led him to the classical music of North India and the sarode. For the past 35 years Steve has dedicated himself to learn this complex art form and carry on the teachings of his illustrious guru, the legendary musician, the late Ustad Ali Akbar Khansahib, one of India's treasures. Steve's many international performances have included Australia,New Zealand, Japan, Europe, Canada, and throughout the U.S. He currently resides in San Francisco, California actively teaching and performing the beautiful classical music of North India. Following Ustad Ali Akbar Khansahibs passing in 2009, Steve has been blessed to continue his music studies through biannual visits by Padmashri Pandit Rajeev Taranath, a senior sarode disciple of Ali Akbar Khansahib. Rajeev-ji has been steadfastly coming to the United States for decades to share his music through teaching and performance.

CHRISTOPHER RIS

Christopher Ris began his study of sarod and vocal music in 1971 under Maestro Ali Akbar Khan.  He has since performed as a soloist, with Ali Akbar Khans orchestra The New Maihar Band, composed music for 3 films on life in India and an episode of the television series Young Indiana Jones. He has collaborated with flamenco dancers and guitarists as well as Necati Celik, principal oudist of the National Orchestra of Turkey.  In 1974 he began a 20 year relationship with the renowned kathak dancer Chitresh Das. As Mr. Das primary musical accompanist and composer in residence they dramatically changed the style of kathak accompaniment, bringing the instrumentalist into the simultaneous improvisations with the dancer that were formerly the province of the tabla drummer alone.  In 2012 he met Pandit Rajeev Taranath, one of Ali Akbar Khans first students, and, captivated by Rajeev-jis unique melodic and rhythmic style began studying intensely with him on his bi-annual visits to the US.

RAJEEV TARANATH
Internationally acclaimed performer, Rajeev Taranath is today one of the leading exponents of the sarod. His performances masterfully combine the depth and rigor of the tradition of Hindustani classical music with an inspired imagination and emotional intensity. A distinguished disciple of the legendary maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, his musicianship has been recognized with many honors including the Padma Sri in 2019, one of Indias highest national award in the arts.

"Taranath's sarod pulls heart strings... - Express, New Delhi

luminous" - The Los Angeles Times

"profound musical skills" - Sydney Morning Herald

Rajeev Taranaths sarod improvisations mixed the spiritual and the spirited...the raga began with introspective meditation and proceeded into an exuberant rhythmic celebration. -New York Times
