Ariel Dorfman imagined his award-winning play, Death and the Maiden set in any country that has given itself a democratic government just after a long period of dictatorship. Director Paul O'Connell stages this play at Theatre9/12 in the present crisis of an illusory but recognizably familiar country.
Death and the Maiden is a heart-racing thriller about a woman suddenly confronted with the abuser of her past. Ripped apart by two loyalties, her husband struggles to resolve his wifes and his guests testimony. Through their dynamic confrontations Dorfman challenges us with insights into the machinations of humanity in politics, questions of memory vs. madness, the uncertainty of truth, and the conflict of how to serve justice when revenge and restitution invade our passions.

ABOUT THEATRE9/12 After the shock the world experienced on 9/11/01, every creative artist was summoned to fulfill their traditional responsibility: To heal and lift humanity to understand this new time To make order of perceived chaos To reassess complacent values To heal the past in order to embrace a progressive step forward. At Theatre9/12, trained and working actors, both union and non-union, continue to develop their talents and skills through workshops and performances. Their efforts climax with productions presented through the Actors Equity Association Members Project Code. Theatre9/12 staff assists these union actors in making these projects come to life.
