The Maids by Jean Genet
The House of Ithaqua presents "The Maids" by Jean Genet at The Cherry Artspace. Directed by Ivy Stevens and translated by Bernard Frechtman, Genet reimagines the 1933 murder that captured the attention of the French upper class in this gripping psychological thriller.
Madame (Ariel Arbisser), a woman of privilege and means, is mostly unaware that her maids are obsessed with her, both by way of loving devotion and murderous rage. Every night sisters Solange (Marlo del Toro) and Claire (Melissa Jo Hill) take turns pretending to be Madame as they highlight her cruelty and play out a revenge fantasy against her. Every night they fail to complete their fantasy before their mistress returns. Every night until this night.
Featuring live music by Alejandra Diemecke and Grace Dashnaw. Stage management by Maggie Lapinski, costumes by Liz Kitney, lighting design by Lea Davis and fight choreography by Holly Adams.
Audiences should be warned that "The Maids" contains themes of sexual violence and suicide.
