Author Event with David Sedaris
Half Price Books is thrilled to host David Sedaris on Thursday, June 13 at 7 p.m. for the paperback release of his book, CALYPSO. If you want to attend the event, please read this information carefully and in its entirety, as it contains very important details.
TICKETS: There are two levels of tickets available for this event. Every attendee must have a separate ticket.
VIP tickets include reserved seating, a paperback copy of CALYPSO and first access to the signing line.
General admission is free and is open to the public. Seating for General Admission is first-come, first-served. Holders of General Admission tickets will enter the signing line after all VIP ticket holders have had their books signed.
SEATING: Because of our layout and capacity limitations, we can only accommodate 300 seated attendees. The seating area will open at 5 p.m. and will be first-come first-served. If we exceed 300 attendees, we will be unable to provide chairs for every attendee and not all parts of the store will have full visibility. However, David Sedaris will remain in the store until everyone in the line has had a chance to meet him and get a book signed.
SIGNING LINE: You will show your Brown Paper Ticket for a corresponding colored line pass that is numbered on the day of the event at 5 p.m. Passes will be distributed on a first-come first-served basis. VIP attendees will be called to the signing line first. General Admission will enter the signing line second.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: David Sedaris will stay and sign for every attendee.
There is to be no photography, recording or video for the entire evening, reading or signing.
Please do not ask the author to sign books written by other people.
ABOUT CALYPSO:
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong.
When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And life at the Sea Section, as he names the vacation home, is exactly as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself.
With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation toward middle age and mortality. Make no mistake: these stories are very, very funny - it's a book that can make you laugh 'til you snort, the way only family can. Sedaris's writing has never been sharper, and his ability to shock readers into laughter unparalleled. But much of the comedy here is born out of that vertiginous moment when your own body betrays you and you realize that the story of your life is made up of more past than future.
This is beach reading for people who detest beaches, required reading for those who loathe small talk and love a good tumour joke. Calypso is simultaneously Sedaris's darkest and warmest book yet - and it just might be his very best.
