London Young Sinfonia Presents: Retrospect
Schubert looks for inspiration in Mozart's classicism for his Fifth Symphony. Stravinsky refracts Pergolesi and the Italian Baroque through a modernist lens in Pulcinella. Schnittke brings sardonic humour and wit to Bach and Corelli through his Suite in the Old Style. In Verdi's case, it wasn't until thirty years after the premiere of La Traviata that the opera was permitted to be staged in a contemporary setting.
We have complex relationships with our histories -- at times reflecting our current condition, at others providing perspective or necessary distance from the present. This programme offers a few examples through the symphonic repertory of the 19th and 20th centuries that sought inspiration from the past to forge a new path forward.
Programme: Franz Schubert - Symphony no. 5 Giuseppe Verdi - La Traviata Preludes to Acts I & III (featuring Philip Keller, Guest Conductor) Alfred Schnittke - Suite in the Old Style (orch. Spivakov) Igor Stravinsky - Pulcinella Suite
The London Young Sinfonia was founded as the London Youth Symphony Orchestra in 2011 by Ben Glassberg with the aim of providing an informal, but high quality orchestral playing opportunity for young musicians. Many of the core players in the orchestra joined while still at school, and are now working professionally as orchestral musicians, or studying at post-graduate level at music college. In order to reflect this new dynamic of the orchestra, we changed our name to the London Young Sinfonia. Before each concert we undertake an intense burst of rehearsals, enabling us to keep the music fresh, whilst also allowing our players to maintain their other musical commitments.
