The Renovators
The Renovators first met in a Portland nightclub on Fore Street named Cadillac Jacks. The players came from various and far corners of the state. The little rhythm trio was dubbed "The Hoodoo Kings" admiring a Tabby Thomas tune entitled "Hoodoo Party" from the prolific Louisiana Excello Record label. Although they all played with area bands and were involved in their own projects, this little trio had a toe hold on Thursday nights to help round out a week's pay while experimenting with their own musical interests and the music of invited guests.

A guest that came by one night and was asked to keep dropping by, was singer, songwriter and Telecaster tradesman, Bob Rasero. Bob recognized a natural blend when he heard one and slowly introduced his originals to the band. The Hoodoo Kings accompanied Bob and played his own music as Bob heard it in his head, so The Renovators were born. Bob had been warehousing tunes since his early days in NYC while playing with his then rhythm section of the Hemberger brothers on bass and drums with the compliment of Peter Framptons Bob Mayo world class keyboarding. So, as they say...the hits just kept on coming!

Back in Maine, this new collection of Renovators produced "With These Hands" their first CD of original material in 1996. Since then, other collections have been recorded. "Other Sides", a chronicle of the New York and Maine Renovator units showcasing various original selections. This was followed by "Three Cords", a heartfelt tribute to depth through simplicity and flavored by saxophonist/arranger Lou Marini along with others. "Captured Live in Portland" is the most recent effort by the Renovators, and as the title describes, it captures what these guys can do in a live show. The current rhythm section line up contains area veterans Robin Worthley on keyboards, Kent Allyn and his tasty bass in step with the drum bedrock of Jeff Davison. Another recording is in the works, but so far quality is the only concept word that is being revealed.

If a reliable yardstick for original music is how colleagues measure you, musicians near and far list The Renovators as a favorite citing a knowledgeable use of economy combined with clever songwriting and tasteful arrangements. Even Texas piano maven Marcia Ball stopped her show to issue sincere accolades about her opening act. The bands influences are all traditional, but stem from many regions...many eras. There is something for everyone at a Renovators performance. "The Debra Winger Song", a humorous warning of the dangers of daydreaming while operating power tools, the beautiful and true "Lonesome Whistle Sound", the fishing analogy stuffed "Big One" and a topical "Fake Blues" for all you Snopes validators.

Stop by and witness these craftsmen building their special sound.
