Dave Peloquin & Jerry Bryant: Songs & Chanteys From the Era of Moby-Dick
Seasoned sea music singers Dave Peloquin and Jerry Bryant will perform Songs and Chanteys From the Era of Moby-Dick," a program in honor of Herman Melvilles 200th birthday year. It will feature songs and chanteys mentioned in his books, and other material that would have been familiar to Melville during his time as a sailor.
Peloquin brings his tenor voice and guitar accompaniment to the evening. In addition to being an established solo performer on the folk scene, he has performed at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts with his group, Compass Rose. For over 30 years he has been associated with the Mystic Seaport Museum as a chanteyman, historic interpreter, and festival performer. He has produced twelve albums, soundtracks for film, and many special projects including work for George Winston. Apart from his life in music, his scholarly interests find him lecturing on Herman Melville and Moby-Dick.
Bryant, a Maine-native, has been a celebrated performer of maritime songs and has performed widely throughout the U.S. over the last 30 years. His many appearances include prominent maritime music festivals in San Francisco, Chicago, Portsmouth, and Mystic, Connecticut. Performing on guitar, banjo, concertina, melodeon and other acoustic instruments, his repertoire includes hundreds of traditional and contemporary folk songs. He was a consultant on maritime songs for the hit film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World starring Russell Crowe, and provided the soundtrack for Penguin Audio Books In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick.
The program, performed in the historic 1802 church on the banks of the Kennebec, will also touch upon the historical context of the time and how the songs and chanteys were used in shipboard work and 19th century maritime culture.
