Tour: Idea Foundry/400 West Rich
Adaptive reuse is the process of taking an old building or site, and reusing it for a purpose other than it was designed. Typically, it is closely related to historic preservation or conservation around cities with rich history. However, there are both advantages and disadvantages to taking on an adaptive reuse project, which may help determine whether or not to proceed with adaptive re-use. Buildings have been reused throughout history. The current discourse of diverse trends in preservation together with awareness for sustainable environments has led to a surge in adaptive reuse projects. The combination of new and old architecture ensures the retaining of authentic character while providing an appropriate new use and revitalizing the structure. We also, however, will draw on ideas presented by many academics that preservation movements worldwide, working hand in hand with governments and developers, have become a force for gentrification and social displacement, driving out the poor to make room for wealthy homeowners and tourists. The objective of this work is to propose a theoretical and practical background for a systematic process to analyze adaptive reuse architectural precedents and their effects in Columbus, Ohio. This tour will include two working collaborative spaces in adaptive re-use projects. Both The Idea Foundry and 400 W. Rich are a community of makers, designed to indirectly and directly collaborate, exploring new ideas and unleashing opportunities to make things. The tour will conclude at Brew Dog in Franklinton, an adaptive reuse project for the brewers North American headquarters. An informal discussion will be lead by architecture firm, Design Collective, over drinks
