Adam Gopnik- Special One-Man Show on Liberalism
In another great one-man show from Adam Gopnik, he asks fundamental questions about defending liberalism in the face of impending authoritarianism. What exactly is the meaning of liberalism? Is it political? Cultural? Moral? Do we need to rescue it? In his one-man show, based on his new book, A Thousand Small Sanities, Adam Gopnik delivers answers with his usual wit and flair, and we emerge wiser and happier for it.
Immediately following the Presidential election of 2016, Gopnik wrote A Thousand Small Sanities as a way of explaining liberal and humanist ideals while our institutions are under attack. Liberalism is about reform. It's about change. And to understand it, Gopnik makes it easy for us by doing the heavy lifting and going back to its roots. He makes high culture accessible to those of us who are not necessarily fluent in the subject he's tackling. He makes philosophers user friendly. He brings 19th Century novelists right into our sphere, because issues such as women's suffrage have been kicking around for a long time. His observations are deeply personal, often really funny, and completely relatable for all of us. Adam brings us the unexpected, the quirky and eccentric aspects of artists, great figures in history and letters who changed the world, who suddenly become engaging humans in his hands and voice.
