"I'm proud to announce that I am running to serve you as the next Mayor of Charleston," Seekings posted via Facebook. "Our city is undergoing fast change and we face big challenges. Whether its flooding, traffic or rampant growth, Charlestonians deserve a Mayor with a plan for action and the ability to get things done. "
Seekings said the next leader of Charleston should work to build a consensus, manage growth and secure funding for major projects.
Seekings was first elected to the city council in 2009. He is also on the board of the Charleston Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) and recently took over as the Executive Director of the Cooper River Bridge Run following the passing of Julian Smith.
In the launch of his candidacy Thursday, Seekings also touted a $60 million effort to replace broken drainage valves and restore the lower battery sea wall.
The mayoral election is on Nov. 5.
