DUNAVA: An Evening of Vocal Magic
Dunava ("the Danube") is Seattle's premier Balkan women's choir, made up of singers with broad musical and performance experience and a passion for intricate harmonies and varying vocal technique. They have been delighting and moving audiences with folk songs from Eastern Europe for almost 15 years.
Dunavas repertoire spans the vast range of vocal traditions from the Balkans and beyond, featuring lush harmonies and strident dissonance, dance tunes and mournful ballads. Some songs are hundreds of years old and have been passed on through oral tradition, while others are recent compositions in the unique style of specific regions. The lyrics celebrate home, family, and love, and also lament hardship and loss. The expressive music speaks for itself and communicates with listeners all over the world across language boundaries.
This is Dunavas first visit to Yakima. The concert will be about 90 minutes in length, with a short intermission. Refreshments will be served.
