On Sunday, April 28, 8:00pm (doors open 7:00pm) New Music Circle will enhance its 60 th Anniversary Season with a special pop up event at Foam, 3359 S. Jefferson Ave, St. Louis, MO, 63118. Admission is $20.00 / $10.00 for struggling music supporters.
And this will be a truly special event: Four top musicians trombonist Steve Swell, percussionist Michael Zerang, cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm and woodwind player Gebhard Ullmann, all of whom have performed with NMC in the past, will be joining forces to create a virtuosic synergy of new collaborative music.
Steve Swell hails from Newark, NJ and has been an active participant on the New York City music scene since 1975. His breadth of versatility has allowed him to tour and record with such mainstream artists as Lionel Hampton and Buddy Rich in the past, as well as more contemporary artists like Anthony Braxton and Cecil Taylor more recently, Steves CD, Music For Six Musicians: Hommage à Olivier Messiaen, was listed in NPRs top 50 CDs for 2018.
Born in Chicago, as a first generation American of Assyrian descent, Michael Zerang has been composing, improvising and collaborating in a wide range of multi-disciplinary art forms since 1976, more recently travelling the world to make contact with musicians from Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. As a recording artist, he has over 100 titles in his discography.
The highly eclectic, Chicago based cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm has studied with such stylistically wide ranging artists as Anthony Braxton, Morton Feldman and Pauline Oliveros. His most current involvements are with his Valentine Trio and The Lightbox Orchestra, but he also performs in groups led by Joe McPhee, Peter Brötzman and Ken Vandermark.
Gebhard Ullmann is a saxophonist, bass clarinetist and flutist from Germany. Starting out on recorder at age six, he soon graduated to classical flute and eventually studied with Herb Geller and David Liebman. Among his most famous ensembles was the quartet, Out To Lunch, featuring guitarist Andreas Willers, and a tentet of woodwinds plus accordion, formed in 1991, called Tá Lam. Since then, Ullmann has performed with a wide variety of musicians and recorded as a leader or co-leader on over 50 albums.
