Our Children's Legacy: Music and Dances of Loss and Hope
Dance Currents Inc. and Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra are collaborating on another Music/Dance performance on June 14, 2019 at 8pm at Integrarte, 25 Seaverns, Jamaica Plain. The tickets will cost $25 for the general audience, and students, seniors and BDA members may pay $23.
The program begins with a dance called "Limon Etude", choreographed by Carla Maxwell, who is artistic director of the Limon Company. This will be danced by Li-Ann Lim and sung live by soprano, Marie Clement. Next on the program is a new dance by Dance Currents Inc. entitled "For the Children". The music is by Edvard Grieg and will be played live by Steven Laven, cellist, Judith Lynn Stillman, piano. The dance chronicles the journey of a couple seeking asylum in the United States, and the loss of their child. There are six sections, each set to a piece of Grieg's: Loss/Arietta, Love/Erotikon, Shadows/ Troldtog, At Your Feet/ For Dine Fodder, Phantom Guide/Drommesyn and March/Gangar. The dancers are Kirsten Glaser, Avery Saulnier De Reyes, Alex Jimenez, and Taryn Scott- Kolbe.
The second half of the show will feature the Piano Quintet in F# Minor by Amy Beach. with Liana Zaretsky and Colin Davis on violin, Jean Haig on Viola, Steven Laven on cello and Judith Lyn Stillman on piano. Amy Marcy Cheney Beach (September 5, 1867 December 27, 1944) was an American composer and pianist. She was the first successful American female composer of large-scale art music. Her "Gaelic" Symphony, premiered by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1896, was the first symphony composed and published by an American woman. She was one of the first American composers to succeed without the benefit of European training, and one of the most respected and acclaimed American composers of her era. As a pianist, she was acclaimed for concerts she gave featuring her own music in the United States and in Germany. (Wikipedia)
