Swallow-a-Workshop Series: Asian Heritage Month
The Swallow-a-Workshop Series offers opportunities to exchange training, practices, and ideas between artists of various disciplines. We think of these workshops as experimental art and performance labs where you can explore curiosities among peers.

In line with Asian Heritage Month, this iteration of Swallow-a-Workshops will be Asian-led with Asian-only participants.

C.E. Gatchalian (he/him/his)
Creating Work About Yourself / Creating Work About Others: A Reading & Workshop with C.E. Gatchalian
Monday, May 20, 2019 - 5:00-9:00 pm
Inside Out Theatre, Eau Claire Market, 200 Barclay Parade SW

We're all encouraged to create art about what we know - and we're also encouraged, as artists, to stretch and engage our imaginations.

This workshop will be divided into two parts. The first part will be about creating art about ourselves. Is there/should there be any boundaries to how much of ourselves we should reveal? To what extent should we be mindful about the sensibilities and triggers of our audience?

The second part will be about creating art about others. What happens when the desire or need hits us to write about a community that we are not personally part of, or about an experience that we haven't personally gone through? Should we simply abandon the project, or is there a middle ground wherein we can exercise our right to free expression while following protocols of respect and deference?

Workshop facilitator C.E. Gatchalian will lead an open discussion on these artistic questions, which are becoming increasingly crucial in an age of growing sensitivity and awareness. The discussion will evolve into group activities that will apply these questions to real-life artistic creation. C.E. Gatchalian will also do a short reading from his play Falling in Time.
