2019 RI Women's Choreography Project
In 2018, a few dancers from Festival Ballet Providence, along with a generous donation from an anonymous donor, started the Rhode Island Womens Choreography Project. The show gave eight women from around the state the chance to choreograph a dance work (some of them for the first time in their lives) in the context of a dance world that makes it difficult for female voices to be heard. The event raised almost $800 in proceeds for the Sojourner House of RI. After a great first year, were excited to announce the second annual WCP, and hope to expand upon what is hopefully the start of a tradition. Our mission is to provide an opportunity for womens creative voices to develop, mature, and be heard. The event serves as a platform for aspiring female choreographers to experiment and present a new work to an audience. All available proceeds from the event this year will go to the Womens Fund of RI. Their mission statement is: The Women's Fund of Rhode Island invests in women and girls through research, advocacy, grant making and strategic partnerships designed to advance gender equity through systemic change. (To learn more about the organization, visit https://www.wfri.org/) The shows will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2019, at the AS220 black box theater. Please check out our event page for more details! We hope you can join us for a truly special experience supporting our local arts community and womens voices everywhere.
