In this thirty minute, five-act circus show, my performers (Ed Brewer, Shauna Cain, and Caitlin Marquis) and I attempt to merge scientific research with the performing arts. During my Division III, I conducted ethnographic research with the social circus nonprofit Circus Up, located in Boston, MA, to explore the question: how does social circus create a protective barrier against social and societal determinants of health? This organizations mission is to use circus arts to overcome social barriers and build community with people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. I interviewed nine people involved with Circus Up including staff, volunteers, and youth participants and observed classes at their program at the Brookline Teen Center. Each act is an exploration of one of the five themes I induced from this research: inclusion, chameleon identity, outlet for healthy emotion, openness, and connection/belonging. My performers and I will share our personal relationship to each theme, as well as some of the stories of the research participants in relation to the themes.
