Set in 1943 Cambridge, Stella Watson organizes a writing group of alums from her all-women alma mater in hopes inspiration will strike her once again. Unbeknownst to herself, among the diverse group of women she invites into her home is Lucile Evans, the ex-lover she never truly moved on from. Together, with the radical visions of Vera, the nuance given by Ruby, the compassion of Joann, and the romantic idealism of Mae, we are transported through them to the kingdom of Korr, where we meet Claude, a naive lover who is sent on a mission by a corrupt king for attempting to break into the royal palace. Through the show we bare witness to a budding new love, the complications of an old flame, and a surprisingly strong friendship, all of which bond these women deeper, and translate heavily into their writing.
